North Atlantic Treaty Organization

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Allied nations decided to continue their alliance, politically and militarily, in order to prevent the international spread of communism: a dangerous threat to the Western democracies’ existence. That alliance became known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), named after its establishing North Atlantic Treaty. In the latter half of the 20th century, NATO was confronted by the Warsaw Pact, a rival military organization associated with the Soviet Union and the rapid rise of communism. With the fall of the Soviet Union, however, NATO is adapting to the 21st century and has increasingly assumed a role as a peacekeeping organization beyond that of a defensive military alliance.

This committee is specifically designed for intermediate and experienced delegates. Position papers, although strongly recommended, are not required. However, delegates who wish to be considered for an award must submit their position papers by January 12, 2026, at 23:59 PST. More information about position papers can be found in the Position Paper Guide, on the Delegate Resources Page.

Topic A: Presence in the Arctic (Click to show summary)

The Arctic is one of the most important regions in the world: economically, politically, strategically, environmentally, and socially. However, challenges in navigating this environment have presented themselves, demanding immediate attention. Rapid advancements in technology and volatile geopolitical factors have made the area a contentious ground among global powers, jeopardizing the area’s long-held peace. On the other hand, changes in the physical environment have modified the effectiveness of strategic posturing, operations, and navigation. In order to respond to these evolving challenges, NATO must engage in extensive cooperation to maintain peace and respond to any crises that could threaten the peace of this vital region.

Topic B: Revisiting Nuclear Deterrence Strategies (Click to show summary)

The maintenance of credible nuclear deterrence necessitates a balance between proper demonstration of capability and resolve while avoiding unnecessary escalation. Because shifts in geopolitical power, advances in nuclear technology, and the actions of rival powers can all weaken this perception, the credibility of deterrence plays a decisive role in preserving strategic stability. When it falters, the risks to alliance cohesion, security, and the prevention of large-scale conflict become significantly greater. Amid a changing global security environment, NATO must thoroughly reassess the credibility of its current deterrence and respond to emerging threats presented by opposing world powers. Failure to adapt in an appropriate manner may critically undermine the credibility of the alliance and complicate international stability.
