Since its inaugural session in 1979, the European Parliament has served as one of the central institutions of the European Union. As the lower house of the Union, the European Parliament is composed of 720 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) representing over 450 million constituents across the continent. While the Parliament does not hold the power to initiate legislation, it serves as a crucial counterbalance to the executive of the European Commission, reviewing, amending, and approving legislation. Since the June 2024 elections, the Parliament has been split, with the two largest political groups, the centre-right European People’s Party and the centre-left Socialists & Democrats, both unable to command a majority.
This committee is specifically designed for intermediate and experienced delegates. Position papers, although strongly recommended, are not required. However, delegates who wish to be considered for an award must submit their position papers by January 21, 2025, at 23:59 PST. More information about position papers can be found in the Position Paper Guide.
Topic: Immigration Integration (Click to show summary)
“Immigration Integration” in Europe, as the name suggests, refers to the process of incorporating immigrants into the continent’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. This process entails providing access to education, employment opportunities, language training, and social welfare services while also promoting overall cohesion between immigrants and native populations. Successful integration is crucial for building strong, inclusive communities, reducing social tension, and enabling immigrants to effectively contribute to their new homes. However, integration also comes with major difficulties: funding and executing new programs, aiding new immigrants in settling down, and convincing native populations to embrace their new neighbours. Ultimately, addressing these obstacles is essential and of utmost importance for Europe in its journey to manage migration effectively while reaping its benefits.
Oliver Sjöholm | Director
Entering his final year at St. George’s School, Oliver is beyond thrilled to serve as the Director of the EuroParl at VMUN 2025. As a European resident, Oliver has seen the issues this committee will debate firsthand and is excited for some very productive debate. Ever since stepping foot inside his first MUN conference room as a terrified seventh-grader and arguing with his double delegation partner over who got to raise the placard, Oliver has been captivated by MUN’s fast-paced discourse and energy. Outside of the conference room, Oliver can be found attempting to make a rowing shell go fast, flying across the water in his sailboat, or zooming around the streets of Stockholm on an electric scooter. Oliver looks forward to a tremendous weekend filled with fierce debate and wishes everyone the best of luck at VMUN 2025!
Richard Ying | Chair
As a Grade 12 student from St. George’s School, Richard is absolutely thrilled to serve as a Chair at VMUN 2025. Richard begins his MUN journey back in 2021, as he has been deeply attracted by those energetic speeches and splendid talks that has been made in the conference. He still remember how in his first MUN conference back in Grade 9, he spent two days to finally gain the courage to spit out one sentence. Nevertheless, Richard’s passion towards politics and history fuelled his journey in MUN as a delegate, and eventually as a staff. Outside of the committee room, Richard can be found hanging out with friends, skiing, and playing map games. For the upcoming VMUN 2025, Richard cannot wait for a weekend full of fierce debates and endless coffee.
Sophia Chiu | Assistant Director
As a Grade 11 student at York House School, Sophia is ecstatic to serve as the Assistant Director of EuroParl. From nearly falling asleep during her first midnight crisis to squishing into the elevators at every conference, Sophia has developed a strong passion for MUN and hopes all delegates will too. Outside of the committee room, Sophia can be found on the tennis court, tanning in any UV, or trying to get through all of the seasons of “Suits.” Sophia looks forward to an exciting and productive conference, eager to see the creativity and commitment of each delegate. She wishes everyone the best of luck and hopes this will be an unforgettable iteration of VMUN.
